Case Study: Pipetech uses VARCHART XGantt for rough project planning

Posted by Martin Karlowitsch on Mar 30, 2012 4:58:00 PM

Projects tie up resources in different departments. If many projects are running simultaneously in a company, as is the case with R&D companies, for example, the management of projects and resources is essential for the efficiency of the company. Free capacities have to be occupied if possible and overcrowding has to be avoided

With KapaPlus, the company Pipetech, located in Ratingen, Germany, provides a software solution for project-oriented companies that is used for visualizing the resources' capacities for different decision levels and thus allows to schedule them. KapaPlus calculates the resources that are needed in a project and contrasts them with the base load and customer orders, selecting by project ideas, medium-term plannings and approved customer projects. Hence it is a rough calculation of resources that can be complemented with a detailed view if needed.

With the help of a central project data base that can be quickly integrated into the IT landscape of the company, a very transparent overview of the state of data is created, keeping the responsible project and division managers informed and at the same time providing the business management that is used to more compact planning sheets with relevant data.

The planning's results are visualized in clearly-structured Gantt charts that Pipetech realizes by using VARCHART XGantt ASP .NET. Manfred Nutz, IT Consultant with Pipetech, gives reasons for the decision to use the NETRONIC component: "With NETRONIC's VARCHART XGantt ASP .NET we rely on a largely platform-neutral software component for the integration of professional project and resource planning functions in our application development. Due to the seamless integration of graphical planning and reporting functions in our sectoral and trade-specific data base applications, planning activities in the project workflow are being supported in an optimal way. Furthermore we are thrilled by the outlook of constantly enhancing this component by using the respective technologies."

Rough planning is essential, e.g. in the tender phase, to recognize possible resource bottlenecks in advance as is illustrated by a red bar in the following planning table. Possible project end dates can also be reliably deduced from the chart:

By being a web-based solution, KapaPlus is available also to local teams and allows an easy rough planning of resources. KapaPlus is based on the Microsoft ASP.NET/AJAX technology and uses a state-of-the-art user interface for displaying the production schedules created with VARCHART XGantt in the browser, consisting, amongst others, of:

    • undo/redo mechanisms

    • modal popup-dialogs for the controlling of the planning tables

    • global and user-specific layouts for the planning tables

    • project-related versions of the planning tables simulation

    • rough-planning-compatible resource-scheduling assistant

Customer Case Study: Advanced Planning & Scheduling Within SAP Business One

Posted by Martin Karlowitsch on Dec 16, 2011 9:34:00 AM

For more than twenty years the beas group AG has been solution partner for medium-sized manufacturing enterprises. Since 2002, the company whose headquarters are located in Switzerland, has been focusing on the ERP system SAP Business One and on the development and marketing of industry solutions for the manufacturing and supply industry. Thus they have become one of the leading international SAP Solution Partners. beas' comprehensive solution provides quick and easy access to all company information and to those reports and documents that are needed for the decision-making in all departments of a company: Marketing, purchasing, accounts, production.

The be.as industry solutions consist of several modules that are tailored to the individual needs of the customers. The module APS (Advanced Planning and Scheduling) is used for fine tuning when order times, processing times, transitional periods, capacity utilization, availability of resources and dates are crucial parameters in the value-added process. Here, beas uses a Gantt chart to compare the schedule-relevant activities to the required resources. The visualization that is realized with VARCHART XGantt ActiveX allows the transparent representation of highly complex data structures with a high number of dependencies.

Even large amounts of data can be handled without problems. "The communication between NETRONIC Software und beas went smoothly right from the start. The construction of a first version in a Powerbuilder environment was completed within four weeks. All requirements, amongst others the multilingual interface, could be fulfilled in no time by using the ActiveX control. Due to the very detailed documentation we seldom had to contact the NETRONIC support. If we needed help, however, the support responded quickly and in a professional way", says Martin Heigl, development manager of the beas group AG.

Encouraged by the positive experience, the beas group AG will continue to use VARCHART for their planning visualizations.

Embedding A Gantt Chart Control Into A Servoy Application: A Customer Case

Posted by Martin Karlowitsch on Oct 31, 2011 11:05:00 PM

TMA Systems offers advanced Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). The products and services are used by facility professionals around the world for customers in diverse fields such as education, healthcare, telecommunications, transportation, and manufacturing. The TMA application can be deployed locally or over the Internet as a web-based solution. TMAultra is the newest suite of products. Developed using Servoy, these products allow users to deploy on Windows, Linux, and Mac operating systems or to a web browser as pure html.

TMA makes use of Gantt charts within the application. TMA uses an IT2BE plugin which utilizes the VARCHART JGantt JavaBeans from NETRONIC.

One of the solution’s core modules is the Scheduler, used to schedule and view a technician’s workload featuring a Gantt chart. The chart includes a tree representation of the schedules, grouped by technician. Unscheduled work is shown at the top with available technicians displayed on the left. The illustration below shows a daily Gantt chart.

When a technician is dragged and dropped on a work order, the technician’s schedule is updated and displayed as a task on the Java Gantt chart. One or more technicians can be scheduled to one or more work orders at once. The task can be easily rescheduled by dragging it to a new time or by dragging the right edge to update the duration.

Additional tabs are utilized to display differing elements and views of the scheduling process: a list view of information in the Gantt chart, parts, tools and purchase requisitions. The TMA Scheduler optionally includes a technician’s backlog items, allowing the user to view previously scheduled, but not yet completed, work orders. This allows the technician’s backlog to be rescheduled and considered when scheduling new work.

Users can control which schedules are presented on the Gantt chart using several selections, including date and shift.
